About Us

Xmarks was founded in 2006 under our original name Foxmarks. Our bookmark sync browser add-on is one of the most popular in the world with over twenty million downloads and counting. Xmarks is available as a free add-on for Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer, and Safari (Mac OS) and can be downloaded here. In addition to bookmarks, our extension also synchronizes open tabs (Firefox, Chrome, IE) and browsing history (Firefox).

Xmarks also provides exciting bookmark-powered web discovery features. Our Smarter Search and Site Info features help you uncover the best sites on the web based on what millions of people like you are bookmarking in their web browser. Our products are actively used in over four million browsers and we manage over a billion bookmarks for our users. We extract anonymous information from that corpus of bookmarks to provide web site information and similar site recommendations.

In November 2010, Xmarks was acquired by LastPass, makers of the award-winning cross-browser, cross-platform online password manager. The acquisition included a restructuring of Xmarks into a "freemium" business model while bringing Xmarks' powerful bookmarks solution to millions more users.

The acquisition was a success because LastPass and Xmarks share a common vision. Xmarks has always striven to simplify people's digital lives by providing easy access to their favorite sites. LastPass believes in providing a faster, easier, and safer online experience through secure data and password management. Together, Xmarks and LastPass are working to help millions of users from around the world to access their data from anywhere, at any time.

Our Discovery Technology

At its core, our discovery technology is powered by the over one billion bookmarks we manage for our users. By analyzing bookmarks we can determine the popularity of a web site based on how frequently it is bookmarked and what topics a site is about based on bookmark folders and tags. We also recommend similar sites based on how bookmarks are grouped into folders. We think of bookmarks as “votes”, and we’ve built some state-of-the art algorithms to effectively tally those votes to find the best sites across a wide range of topics.

Our Sync Technology

Xmarks works in the background to keep your bookmarks and tabs in sync across computers and securely backed up in the cloud. Under the hood, we’ve created a state-of-the art sync engine to handle the myriad of challenges involved in data synchronization. Our sync engine also keeps automatic online ‘snapshots’ of your bookmarks, enabling easy Web access plus backup and restore features.

Our products now synchronize across Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer, and Safari browsers running on Windows, OS X, and Linux. Our Safari product is only available for the Mac OS X version of Safari.
