I too was a fan of smartmoney.com until they decided to do some site updates. To my amazement, the tool I most used the service for was first buried in the site and then completely removed. This tool is the real-time stock watch list. I used it to tell me when a stock was getting to a buy or sell price (you pay $108/yr for real-time quotes).

After several emails to technical support and no change to the issue I wrote customer service to cancel my account and refund the balance. They informed me that I was not due a refund as per their contract. I reminded them that they promised to deliver a working web site.

I am still waiting for their answer.

I don't believe their web developers understand what the site is supposed to do.

As for the rest of the site...

Using the stock charts is awkard. First you click on a chart to make it accessable. Then you select the time period and the chart redraws. There is an intraday chart that is useful for watching how a stock is trading. However, when you refresh the chart it goes to default time period (not intraday) so you have to select the intraday time period again. The way I would like to see this tool work is to have the chart update automatically on each new trade.

The site has a nice graphical display of insider trading. They use colored circles on a timeline to record purchases and sales. The size of the circles represent the value of the transaction.

The site has a 'map of the market' graphical representation where you can quickly see what segments are trading up or down. However, I found that I this tool was not useful to me.

Meantime, I found a much better site for real time stock tracking at a cheaper price. Check out advfn.com. They actually understand what an investor is looking for.

Stock information at your finger tips!: Smartmoney.com has valuable information about stocks and shares. It has everything about how to invest on shares and what would be best time to invest. They would even advice about the industry standards on a periodic basis. If you are an investor, definitely this should be an useful website to keep it handy before you invest on anything. If you are a intra-day investor, you get a periodic quotes all around the day. However, they have not categorized everything to access what ever we want about stocks. Otherwise, it is a fantastic website to have a handful of things about shares.

Smart Money Magazine Online: I do like this site, it offers all of the articles that you would typically find in their magazine, but the site goes deeper and is much more current thant what can be accomplished in print. I really liked the fact that they have a special section for small business with tips and articles written for entrepreneurs and small business owners. Often, financial websites seem to be talking only to major CEOs. I also like the stock "watch" list on the first page where I can customize with my own portfolio of stocks. This saves me from having to click open quotes on individual stocks. I don't like the fact that the site opens with an ad, it just adds one more layer to get to the site and even a few extra seconds of time spent is annoying to a user. Overall I like the articles and is a site that I will visit again.

Great site for all things money and investment related: SmartMoney is part of the Wall Street Journal group and as you would expect the depth and breadth of coverage is excellent. The site is easy to use and well laid out with main sections including coverage of stocks, investing, small business as well as additional tools to keep an eye on your stock portfolio. I really liked the Portfolio tool which enables you to enter your stock information and look at historic data and trends all in one free to use tool. On the downside sometimes the adverts on the screen tend to distract and confuse from the information you are looking for and I hope that this is something that they can clear up in the course of time. Overall an excellent financial resource which should enable you to keep an eye on those shares.
