Very useful for certain areas: I used this site to look for properties to rent in Maui for a one week vacation. It is really good for that use. But when I wanted to do the same thing for a place in Scotland, it wasn't as useful. Must be that Europeans always have to do things differently ;) The site could definitely improve it's UI and features, which is why I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5.
Work With Owners Direct to find Your Next Vacation Rental: This site allows owners to post rentals from all over the world, it is well laid out. The site is easy to navigate, but I did not like the fact that you have to join and pay annual fees in order to advertise property for rent. There is a tab on the main page that says "Join Us" which is where you read about the requirements. The site lists alot of rental properties (about 115,000) with good detailed summaries provided. I think this site is average, but I do not understand why someone would pay to advertise their property for rent when there are so many free sites available.
A good website to find rental properties: This website gives a very convenient and reliable way to book in vacation rooms. Users can have a fair picture on the home and amenities available. The property managers also can post the pictures for marketing. It is reliable transaction between the property manager and the user as VRBO gives 5000$ guarantee. The negative aspects of the website is no contact us information available as i need to browse homeaway.com to get the contact information in case of any discrepency.The search has to be refined to enable auto spelling correction and exclude spaces in the city names. Overall it is really a good website to find home like hospitality away from home.
Vacation Rentals by Owner - Homes Away from Home: I have used this site many times and I love it. Traveling with a large group or with children often requires accomodations that are larger than what hotels can offer. This site lists homes that the owners rent out on a year-round basis or just during premium months. There are typically multiple interior and exterior pictures posted along with the list of amenities and weekly and overnight rates charged for peak and non-peak periods. I really like the reservation calendar because you can see immediately whether the lodging is available before you actually make contact with the owner. The only downside to the site is that you cannot sort by number of bedrooms which would be helpful so that you don't have to sift through 2 bedroom accomodations to find the 4 bedroom chalet that you are looking for. Overall, I love this site and have stayed at some beautiful condos and cottages that I would not otherwise found.
