I love the social aspects of last.fm - scrobbling songs is great.
It is a shame that the actual music sometimes isn't the best... for popular bands the radio station is definied primarily by popularity, so good popular music is totally diluted by irritating pop. The actual qualities that make the music good - style, lyrical content, rythm, intensity, soul - are not used in the calculation of similarity.
For less well known music it is pretty great though, and it is really nice that there are no adds. Truly good work :-)
Last.fm is a great music site which allows you to list all of your favourite songs and artists that you listen to and also to create your own dedicated music page. It is free. The site allows you to make friends and to keep in contact with other site users from all over the world. They can either share your musical tastes or through them you can learn about other bands and artists. You can contact them (either privately or in public, i.e, on their own page) and share links, You Tube videos, MP3's, etc. Each user can also create a free radio station which is based upon all of their favourite songs and bands for other site users to listen to. The more artists you listen to the better the variety played on your radio station. There is also the ability to create your own profile which appears on your page along with all of your charts and other fun details. This profile allows you to write up about yourself, put visuals up (moving picture.gif's, etc) of whatever you like whether it be pictures of yourself or of your favourite bands and so on. You can automaticaly create colourful charts, lists and tables of all of the music you listen to, whether it be on a weekly/monthly basis or of your all time favourites for all to see. It is great for music analysis. Best of all, Last.fm details all up and coming gigs, festivals and other musical events. You can find out dates and locations of any music event whether it be in the area where you live or anywhere else around the country or in the world and you can also arrange to meet up with other site users who are also attending any of these events. The site is fun to use, informative and it is very addictive. Last.fm caters for all musical tastes and genres. There are no horrible advertisements, no dodgy spam, and nothing at all irritating. I use Last.fm every day and I absolutely recommend it. Did I also mention that it is free?
Not as good as Pandora for radio, but unparalelled for music analysis and music social networking. A must use website, just like facebook or twitter. Use scrobbling (google it) programs to track your music from itunes or pandora on this site.
