Cinefex is possibly the premier magazine devoted to cinema special effects, their design and production, from initial concept to the final product. The magazine comes out quarterly, each issue featuring three or four in-depth articles focused on current major effects pictures. Interviews with the key personnel outline not only how they did it, but the problems they had to resolve in geting the effects done on time and on budget, and how effects shots from multiple vendors were made to work together. There are many beautiful pictures from the final films, as well as work-in-progress shots showing the construction and operation of visual effects stages and equipment. They don't give away the inner workings of the various software systems, unfortunately, so don't expect Cinefex to be a guide to writing effects software. But the broad brush Cinefex uses to outline the visual processes contains lots of fascinating information on how the most popular special effects blockbusters were designed and executed, how the major problems were resolved, and how the actors interfaced with the technology to bring partially artificial characters to life. I'd recomend Cinefex both for thoe who want to get into the motion picture industry, and for those who spend their spare time pondering how those amazing effects were accomplished.
