Minecraft is a game in development by Markus Persson, A.K.A. Notch. Minecraft is currently in alpha and revolves around the concept of building blocks to create anything you want. The current versions are Creative mode, in which players can build endlessly without any survival needs, and Survival mode in which players have to mine for resources, fight monsters and explore dungeons in a world thats more than 8 times as big as the earth's surface area. The game also has multiplayer capabilities and preorders (which give access to custom skins and survival) are open.

As if you don't waste enough of your time in a gamer's haze, here's Kotaku: a gamer's guide that goes beyond the press release. Gossip, cheats, criticism, design, nostalgia, prediction. Don't get a life just yet.
WARNING- DO NOT GO TO THIS SITE. IT IS INCREDIBLY ADDICTING AND YOU WILL BE SUCKED INTO IT, YOU WILL HAVE NO SOCIAL LIFE- IT WILL BE LIKE A HEROIN ADDICTION. Well, minus the AIDS. I love this game- it's incredibly fun, but it's so addicting. It's sort of a more complex online lego concept, great for creative minds, but you will easily get sucked into it. So if you want a social life, I wouldn't recommend this game. If you have nothing better to do, go ahead
It is awesome, when you can build a world for your character to wander through, like a more adult, detailed version of leggos.
However, it is far more awesome, when you are allowed to change the textures of your blocks, essentially being able to control the texture, shape and general gameplay of everything for miles around.
